Band and Orchestra Recruitment
Transitioning from Fourth Grade General Music to Beginning Band and Orchestra
Next Year's Music Classroom Choices
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Your child’s school will have three choices for music:
Band – Students learn to play a wind or percussion instrument. (Flute, Clarinet, Trumpet, Trombone)
Orchestra - Students learn to play a string instrument. (Sting Bass, Cello, Viola, Violin)
General Music (GM) – Students will focus on vocal and as well as a variety of contemporary instruments like Ukulele, Keyboards, etc.
To participate in band or orchestra, your child must have an appropriate instrument.
Your family may:
1. already have an instrument in your possession.
2. purchase or rent a new or used instrument, from a reputable local dealer.
3. may be eligible to rent an instrument from the school district.
KSD (Kent School District) prioritizes the rental of instruments to students that qualify for Free and Reduced lunch. Only after all students who qualify for free and reduced lunch have received instruments will others be eligible to rent a district instrument. To rent an instrument from the district, KSD is required by law to request permission to check FRL status.
A student may also learn to play the following instruments in band, but the student must provide the instrument as KSD does not have these to rent.
· Alto Saxophone
· French Horn
· Percussion (bell and snare kit)

Dear Fellow Musicians,
I can remember back in 1970 when my first band director gave us time to try all of the band instruments. At that time, I thought I wanted to play the drums. When I tried the trombone, it was a match. I've been playing since then. I'm currently in community groups and still playing strong.
Each year we have a instrument sampling session for our fifth graders. We would love to have you come and work with our students.
